Honors Assignments
Since this is an honors class there will be additional assignments that are required according to the state department of education. This class will also move faster than a normal Algebra 1 class. The following are some of the suggested activities we will engage in:
Research paper that shows the history of math and the impact on society
Research paper outline with power point that shows how one of the standards in Algebra 1 is used in the real world (the power point must have video clip of a mathematics used in the real world according to the standard chosen). This can be obtained using United Streaming & Illuminations websites. United Streaming can be used for 30 days with no fees. You must just simply sign up for it.
Wii presentation of data analysis (This will be done as a group project to be assigned)
History of the discipline mathematics your job will be to research different styles of mathematics in other cultures and the values they place on the content or discipline and how it is different from our culture or values (The assignment will be presented as a power point project)
Open-ended investigations (Group project) in which you select questions and design research based questions on real world applications that connect jobs to mathematics. (This means that you will picking a specific job in the real world and designing questions to interview some in the field, actual interview them, and write your findings up). This will involve critical thinking. This project will be a portfolio assignment.
As stated above these are only suggested activities for the class, instructor may find the need to change these at any time to meet the needs of the learners.
Grades
Grades in my class are all equal. You will receive grades on daily assignment as well as test, projects, CRA, labs, and quizzes. However, remember there are 9 wks exams that count as 25% of your grade, TN Ready EOC TBA. That is non-negotiable, the test are set by the school and are not subject to change.
Absentees
All days missed in the class count. You can only miss 5 days unexcused for the whole year. Tardies will be given first 2 warnings, 3rd parent note sent home to be signed and brought back, 4th 1 hour Saturday school, 5th 2 hours Saturday school, 6th 3 hours Saturday school, 7th 4 hours Saturday school and referral for student to appear at attendance review board.
Calculators
Calculators are issued for use in the classroom. There are to be no drawing or writing on the calculators. Every student will be assigned a calculator number. You will be responsible for that calculator. Any misuse of the calculator and you will lose your calculator use. Only functions that have been identified to use on the calculator are permitted to use. Any other functions are off limits. Do not lose your chance of a good grade in this class. A lot of work is done of these calculators. Calculators are to be returned at the end of each period in their assigned slots. Any damage to the calculator and you will be responsible for replacing the calculator. I do think the calculators are of great benefit to you and I recommend you purchasing your own to have at home, they cost about $130 at Walmart. No calculators can be checked out.
Rules for Submission of Assignments
Assignments should all have name, date, and assignment number at the top right hand corner of your paper. Such as:
John Doe
8-9-18
A # 1
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
Enter and exit the classroom quietly.
When the tardy bell rings, be in your seat with books, paper, and pencil on desk ready to work. If you need to buy a pencil, you need to do so before the tardy bell rings. All work must be done in pencil, no pen. (Pen work will be thrown in the trash).
Listen and follow directions the first time.
Be courteous and respectful to all persons in the room and their belongings.
Remain in your seat, unless given permission to get up.
Absolutely no physical contact.
No foul language, rude remarks, teasing, and prejudices are allowed. I will be very strict on this rule. I do not put up with any bullying.
No throwing of any objects will be tolerated.
When I am talking, you do not talk. (Unless you have a question pertaining to the subject being discussed. Then you should raise your hand and wait to be called upon).
Calculators and chairs will be assigned and you are responsible for them. Any markings on desks you are responsible for and any calculator misuse, you will lose the right to use a calculator.
Restroom passes will not be issued. You have 5 minutes between classes in which to go to the restroom, so go before coming to class. I know there are emergencies sometimes and I will understand those, but not when they are excessive.
If another person enters the room you are to be silent and do not talk at all.
CONSEQUENCES:
1 Warning
2 Student/Teacher conference
3 Parent/Teacher conference
4 Behavior Referral to Assistant Principal
5 Principal
6 SEVERE Straight to office
Any of these rules can be changed if necessary according to the offense, per teacher or assistant principal/principal discretion.
